Black History Moment in Sports Marlin Briscoe first black starting QB
With this month being black history month I wanted to pay respect for those in sports that have paved the way for us in major ways. Today we give homage to Marlin Briscoe, the first black starting quarterback in the AFL. Briscoe’s story is one of chance and opportunity at the right moment. He was drafted in the 14th round in 1968 by the Denver Broncos. After their star quarterback was hurt he was given a chance to shine and did so graciously on the field. After leawding here he was traded to the Buffalo Bills where he was not the star quarterback but was a great player. After leaving the league Briscoe got into drugs heavily and lost a lot of his wealth including his prized Super Bowl rings. But with all of his adversity he still managed to bounce back and became a mentor for kids at the Boys and Girls club and also started his own football camp for kids.
